Donor sperm treatment in India

60-second summary

Donor sperm can help when a man has no sperm, or when other treatments have not worked, and also for single women. In India, the ART Act 2021 says donor sperm must come from a registered ART bank, with screening and privacy rules. It is used with IUI or IVF, and talking openly with your partner and a counsellor helps with the feelings that come with it.

Donor treatment pathways

  1. Medical reason confirmed

E.g. no eggs or very poor egg reserve, azoospermia, or genetic disease.

  2. Counselling and consent

Both partners understand and give written consent.

  3. Registered ART bank

Donors are screened; their identity is kept confidential by law.

  4. Donor eggs

Donor's eggs are fertilised with partner's sperm; embryo goes to the recipient's womb.

  5. Donor sperm

    Used for IUI or IVF.

  6. Donor embryos

Embryos donated by another couple through a registered bank.

Allowed in India only through registered ART clinics and banks, following the ART Act 2021.
