IUI or IVF with endometriosis?

60-second summary

Endometriosis can make it harder to get pregnant, but many women do conceive with the right treatment. For mild disease and younger age, medicines to help ovulation with IUI is often tried first. For moderate or severe disease, older age, blocked tubes or a male factor, IVF usually gives better chances.

Endometriosis: choosing a path

  1. Diagnosis

Symptoms, examination, ultrasound or MRI; laparoscopy if needed.

  2. Pain relief and hormones

When not trying to conceive; hormones stop ovulation so they pause fertility.

  3. Laparoscopic surgery

Removes spots and adhesions; careful with ovarian cysts to protect egg reserve.

  4. IUI with ovulation medicines

For mild disease with open tubes.

  5. IVF

For moderate–severe disease, blocked tubes, low reserve, older age or failed treatment.

Treatment depends on pain, age, egg reserve, tubes and whether you are trying to conceive now.
