Medicines for endometriosis pain

60-second summary

Endometriosis can cause strong period pain and pelvic pain, and medicines can help many women feel better. Painkillers, the pill, progestins like dienogest and GnRH analogues are the main options. These medicines ease pain but they do not help you get pregnant, because they pause ovulation while you take them.

Endometriosis: choosing a path

  1. Diagnosis

Symptoms, examination, ultrasound or MRI; laparoscopy if needed.

  2. Pain relief and hormones

When not trying to conceive; hormones stop ovulation so they pause fertility.

  3. Laparoscopic surgery

Removes spots and adhesions; careful with ovarian cysts to protect egg reserve.

  4. IUI with ovulation medicines

For mild disease with open tubes.

  5. IVF

For moderate–severe disease, blocked tubes, low reserve, older age or failed treatment.

Treatment depends on pain, age, egg reserve, tubes and whether you are trying to conceive now.
